God made him do it

Posted in : Uncategorized

Last July, Vince Li randomly and brutally stabbed a sleeping Tim McLean to death on a Greyhound bus. After everyone fled the bus and trapped him inside, he methodically cut McLean apart and ate some of his bodyparts. Li was captured after he tried to get out of the bus by a window.

The man is obviously mentally disturbed. Apparently, he now claims not guilty by insanity. I can’t help but curl my lip in derision at the defence, but it’s been clear since the beginning that this man is not entirely there.

“God made me do it.”

But what do we do with him? We don’t jail those who are not criminally responsible because of mental deficit. The man is fucking nuts – even McLean’s family can acknowledge this. It doesn’t mean they want to see him in a hospital for a few months until medication makes him ’sane’ and then released with no punishment. They lost their son. They found out about it on the news first!

I empathise with the McLean family because I want to see Li locked up for a very long time. At the same time, I am proud of my country’s legal code, if not always thrilled with the application of said legal code (See an earlier entry on the Virk murder).

Ultimately, nothing can undo what Li has done. As he regains his sanity under medication, he will have to live with the sickening knowledge that he killed a young man who did nothing but bring joy to other’s lives as a Carnival worker. He robbed two people of their child, and robbed his siblings of a brother. He robbed McLean of a dignified death, and instead gave him moments full of terror and pain.

Yet somehow, this isn’t enough. He needs to be punished more. Sometimes, I seriously regret being civilized. Maybe I will take out my angst at PETA, who tried to capitalize off his death by running an advert detailing the horrific end of Tim McLean..and likening it to how we kill chickens and cattle. Fuckers.
